Worm Care Guide

Taking care of your worms is easy! They need three essentials: water, moderate temperature, and food.

1. Water

  • Worms arrive in dry peat moss, so they may be dehydrated.
  • Moisten their bedding with ½ cup of water per pound of worms to rehydrate them.

2. Temperature

  • Keep worms in a cool, shaded area.
  • They cannot survive above 95°F but tolerate cold temperatures well.

3. Food

  • Feed worms non-meat, non-dairy food waste like vegetable scraps and coffee grounds.
  • If their habitat is microbe-rich, they’ll start breaking down food waste right away!

What to Expect: Worm Shipments

Shipping Timing

  • Worms ship from Utah (Pure Red Wigglers), California (Red Wiggler Mix), Wisconsin (African Nightcrawlers), or Missouri (European Nightcrawlers).
  • Shipments go out Mondays or Tuesdays with a soft Friday afternoon cutoff for Monday shipments.
  • If you order on Saturday, your worms may not ship for up to 9 days (the second Monday).

Orders with Other Items

  • Worms ship separately and may arrive later than other items.
  • If ordered with an Urban Worm Bag (UWB), we may delay your worm shipment by a week to ensure your UWB arrives first and is set up properly.

Worm Arrival & Care

  • Upon arrival, worms are fine in their bedding for a few days.
  • Open the bag and sprinkle ½ cup of water to rehydrate them.
  • Suppliers ship extra worms to account for up to 20% weight loss in transit.

If Your Worms Arrive Dead

Sometimes, shipping issues can cause worms to arrive in poor condition. This can happen in two ways:

  • Dehydration – Worms may appear missing but have dried out. No foul smell.
  • Rotting – A smelly, stringy mass of decomposed worms.

We understand this can be frustrating, and we’re here to help. Notify us immediately if your worms arrive dead, and check out our Live Worms Terms and Conditions for replacement policies.
